Don't Panic, You are an Artist!

by Clint Watson on 9/16/2008 12:44:04 PM

Calm down, don't panic over the current economic news.

Think about this:  Our bodies and brains are wired to react quickly to emotional stimulus.  The old "fight or flight" response.

The pressures of the modern world puts stress on these ancient responses and, if we're not careful, will put is into panic mode.

Panic mode is dangerous because that's when we make bad decisions.

So take a deep breath and lets face this calmly, but realistically:  Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, a falling stock market and a weak dollar:  Obviously not the best overall economic situation.

Now,  take a deep breath, calm down and think rationally.    This is not the end of the world.  The media will report bad news 24 hours a day while ignoring all the "normal" and "good" things that are happening around the world.  Don't let media coverage work you up into a frenzy.  If it makes you feel better, think about the thousands and thousands of companies that are NOT going bankrupt and that ARE financially solid.   They're out there - there's just no reason for the media to report on those companies.

Let's get back to basics and think about things from your perspective for a minute:

You are not a bank.  You are not a brokerage firm.  You are not the underwriter of credit-swap derivatives. . .YOU ARE AN ARTIST.

Your job . . . . in a good economy or a bad one is to strive to produce the best possible artwork you can.  Even in a difficult economy, those who are "best in class" can prosper.  What does it mean to be "best in class?"  It means, to find those 2 or 3 talents that you posses that you can likely do better than anyone else given a large sample of people (say 100,000 people) . . . for you, one of those 2 or 3 areas of excellence is your art.  Make sure you're nurturing your artistic talent.  It is a God-given gift . . . . no it is a God-given responsibility.

YOU ARE AN ARTIST.

That means, unlike a huge percentage of the population, you know what your gift is.  You know where your passion lies.

So what do you do during these challenging times?

First and foremost, stay true to your gifts, stay focused on your talents.

YOU ARE AN ARTIST.  Hold on to that.  Focus on that.

Sincerely,

Clint Watson

Thanks for this very timely blog entry. All this year I've been trying to stay positive, but the latest financial news makes me worry so much sometimes. You're right, it is important not to panic and make hasty decisions, and to remember that unlike most people I know, I know what my passion is: art!

Another great post Clint !

I've not been watching the TV news now for quite some time and I can thoroughly recommend it! Of course I still know what is going on with the economic situation via newspapers but believe me, to stop the constant transmission of fear and panic into your living room, is a Very Very good thing.

There are still people out there who's finances are unaffected by the economic climate and are still buying art. The essential stuff is, as Clint says, work your socks off to be 'best in class' so your art stands out as special. Then work on ways to find the art buyers who are still buying art, market to them, and sell more stuff to them. And I'm not talking about Mr and Mrs Megabucks here... I know of artists successfully selling to people with disposable income who want something original and inspiring for their homes...so the art buyers do still exist!

Best wishes everyone.

Real artists don't panic. They retrench. I call people by phone, my top ten or fifteen people, I haven't been in touch with for awhile. I visit my rolodex to mail handwritten illustrated letters to people. The personal touch can lead to business. I call some of my colleagues and ask them how business is? I repeat this as often as needed. I make the business part of my art life constant.
PS-If any one has some cool guerrilla selling tricks , I'd like to see them. Please email me. Thanks.

This is a great article, and much appreciated. It is important for us to remember that our talent, knowledge and abilities can't be lost. Our skills are our true "wealth" in the bank.

To put the economy in perspective, look at this Yahoo finance graph of the stock market and click the chart's zoom of "max" to see the most years. It is way up from recent years. Way up.

Best wishes to everyone for much success.

Yes, It is about sharing our talents, I believe, I have a responsibility to make the load lighter for myself and everyone. I am letting loose the frustration and becoming the Artist, I have always wanted to be and am destine to be. There is no better time then now to raise our light and share our talents. I am with you on this. Great post. I will be linking in up in my round up.
