FineArtStudioOnline Integrates Facebook Like Buttons

by Clint Watson on 4/23/2010 8:51:45 AM

We have integrated Facebook "Like" buttons on all blogs for artists who have upgraded to our Enhanced templates.

A couple of days ago, Facebook announced that they were making regular Facebook functions available to all outside websites.

This helps to alleviate somewhat one of my past complaints about Facebook, which is they suck traffic that you should have on your own artist website and move it over to Facebook.  But now they have given us a way to keep people on our websites, while still letting them do all the cool social Facebooky things they like to do...and, more importantly, share things with their friends - some of whom - hopefully - will come back to our websites via friends' recommendations they see in their Facebook news feed.

The first option we have added is Facebook "Like" buttons to our standard blog post options bar, which appears at the bottom of all blog posts on our Enhanced templates.

What it looks like on your blog

Here's a screenshot:

What it looks like on Facebook

And here's the cool thing - when visitors click "Like" on your site - they don't leave your site....but the "like" does appear in their Facebook profile...and shows up for all their friends.

Here's what the "like" looks like on my Facebook profile:

Posting to Facebook with a Comment

The like button also lets people post a comment to their Facebook profile just after clicking "Like" - here's what that looks like:

Screenshots are one thing but better yet - try it out below - we certainly hope you "like" us.....

Hope you find this feature useful!

Sincerely,

Clint Watson

Hey Clint,
I've tried to set this up. I'm using enhanced Devonshire, but I can't find the like button anywhere. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi Clint, This is making me want to set up facebook but, time is precious right now. Your input is a great encouragment to us. I may have to start calling you Barnabus; he was the encourager in the New Testement

This is good information. Anything we can
do to keep viewers on our site as artists is
highly beneficial.

Hi Clint, yeah, there are still some bugs to work out. Spencer, do you use Explorer for your browser? I've heard a rumor that Facebook and Explorer are not getting along. I do not have like buttons available either, with Explorer. And I've switched to the enhanced template that the tecs recommended. But it's not just my blog--I don't even get a like button on Clint's blog except for that example panel of what it SHOULD look like. And I did some math--on a daily basis, 63 percent of the people who come to my site use Explorer. It would be nice to get that problem fixed :)

I upgraded my website to the advanced template and now have the "like" buttons. I think this is a great feature and hope that people will take advantage of it. I have Firefox so no problems for me.

Very very cool, Clint...
I love that you work so hard to help make us all more successful.
I know that by making us more successful, it makes you more successful, but hey!!! I love it!!
THANKS!!

Sharon, I'm glad that you get the "like" button with firefox, but have you looked to see how many of your patrons come via Explorer?

Okay... I've been doing a few experiments with people who have this set up... so far it works (I use firefox... guess I'll have to try Explorer as well, based on Dana's comment)

My question is this... Does it count the "likes" on the work page?? Also... Where does it go on FB??? Only on the profile page of the person who likes it or does it ever get to a newsfeed? (Of course I have no idea how ANYTHING gets to a news feed on FB... Sometimes things are there other times they seem to disappear and remain only on your profile page forever.)
I have yet to see anything like "Marian and Cooper like Sharon's painting, XXX" with a little image of the painting.

Am I dreaming???

Ooops that was KAREN's comment... (Sorry)
Too many fabulous painters named Cooper.

You're right of course, Karen Cooper. I just went back into my site with Explorer and these don't show up. Hmmmmmm...

This sounds so exciting, but for some of us reasonably savvy but still not expert computer geeks - what you are telling me, I still don't understand. I looked at Kevin's site and couldn't figure out any 'like'. However, his painting of Catalina is smashing and I wouldn't have seen it otherwise. It is so reminicent of the California Impressionist school ot the 30's. It's almost ehough to make me take a trip to California just to see the painting. Thanks and I'll keep working on figuring this out. With all this computer stuff who has time to paint?

Now that I've read everyone's blog I have another question. I use Safari for Apple, not Explorer or fosfire. I'm going to change my page but does anyone know if it will work?
Cooper
via canvoo.com
Oooooh Marian, you should delete that "of course" from your last comment--it makes it sound like I am always right. Which as we all know really only happens once in a blue moon. Or maybe just on Saturday mornings! :)

I think it's wonderful...thank you!

Yes Cooper, I use Explorer. Still can't see the "like" button.

On an unrelated topic....totally unrelated....I thought some of you might like to watch this. The link will take you to our local PBS station. They have a 30 minute program called INFOCUS. They did a segment on my artwork. It aired last night. It's about 8 minutes long.

Adding the link would be good idea.

Sorry guys and gals....http://www.wsiu.org/infocus

Hi Clint,

I have enhanced my template (I know..somehow that sounds wrong) to include the "like" buttons and I have to say...it's a rousing success!! I have had several people tell me what a brilliant idea this is. So, thank you.

One question: Is there a way we can track who has "liked" our art? I actually tried it out and "liked" one of my paintings. Then, I checked it out on FB and saw that it did work. The next time, I went to that painting, someone else had "liked" it as it said "2." Now, however, it looks like it defaulted back to just the "like" button and there is no number there. It would be helpful if we knew how many people "liked" which paintings (a better idea of what to paint in the future) similarly to our stats. Is there a way to incorporate that?

Thanks again,

Nancy

This is an interesting idea and sounds
like something that is a no-brainer to
do.
