Biography
I'm not in love with any one subject (although my favorite is figures). Right now it's just more about playing in color, pushing paint, layering, making textures, the smell of oil and turpentine, the feel of pastels across paper. I just love the act of painting. When I'm finished for the day I usually have pastel and paint all over myself. I don't think I have one piece of clothing that isn't color stained...and for me that's a good thing!
The success of my work, I think, lies in the composition. I will usually start with a thumbnail value study because the placement of light and dark shapes is what the entire painting hangs on. If the design doesn't work tiny, it certainly won't work ten times larger. As I work, I see things evolve, suggesting changes to express a mood or feeling. This is where the art happens, it's the point in the creative process where I have to get out of the way and let instinct have it's way. Then suddenly (if all has gone well) I have finished a piece of art that I'm truly happy with. I say instinct, but maybe it's experience too. I have been around a while. I've been a graphic designer for 25 years. I've had the busy life of a wife and mother. But I've always painted no matter what. I'm glad I pushed myself sometimes. It's been worth it.
