FineArtViews Painting Competition - May Winners!

by Clint Watson on 6/25/2009 8:50:48 AM

The winners of the May FineArtViews Painting Competition have been posted!

Judge Jim Wodark certainly had his work cut out for him - with over 500 excellent paintings to choose from in the May FineArtViews Painting Competition, he had to somehow narrow it down to the 11 winners - we certainly didn't envy the task.

The "Best of Show" went to Judith Moore Knapp for her painting, "Basking In The New Day Light:"

Congratulations Judith!

Remember, the FineArtViews Painting Competition happens every month!  Greg LaRock is the judge for the June competition so there's still time for you to enter your masterpiece!

Hello Clint,
I was wondering if you might be interested in commenting on something I have noticed over time. It appears that oil painting seems to seen as a much beter medium over the various others. I think this has been shown from the Fine Art competition which is run through your website. There has now been two competitions, and of the 23 or so winners, and finalists, all have been oil paintings. I have no idea how many entries are oil, and how many are others... but you would think that at least one of the above would have been something other than oil.
Just curious what your thoughts are...

Thank you.

Jerry,

It's hard to say, it's certainly nothing intentional on the judging side. I think it's mainly that so many more oil painters are entering than other mediums. The judges are asked to judge ONLY on merit of the artwork, not any other factors. We do plan to invite eventually invite some judges who work in other mediums too.

Hi Clint,
Please don't take my comment as a complaint in any way. Even though I paint in acrylic, I seem to be personally attracted to oil work for the most part. It was more of an observation that I had and was curious about. I think all of the winners were very well done, and deserved to be such. I guess my question was due to a few things such as the amount of oil one sees in galleries, juried shows and other functions. I was wondering if there was a reason, or just a matter of numbers.

Thank you Clint.

Jerry,

I write for Watercolor Magazine and paint in Oil, acrylic, and watercolor. There is definitely an advantage, marketing wise, to paint in oil.

However, painters like Gil Dellinger and Joseph Orr - who paint in acrylic (but the results look like oils) are selling for high prices in great galleries. I've asked them about whether painting in acrylic has hurt sales or if they've gotten any negative feedback from collectors or gallery owners, and the answer for both of them was an emphatic NO - meaning that acrylic has been accepted in their venues.

An encouraging thing for me - as sometimes I would rather paint in a fast drying medium.

I certainly know of a few artists who have become very successful in a medium other than oil, names like Andrew Wyeth, Ray Hendershot and Peter Schulthorpe come to mind, and by no means do I know the many, many others who are in the same vote. I am sort of leaning toward the fact that maybe there are just more artists, serious artists who paint with oil and not the other mediums.
