Biography

Hometown: McKenzie, Tn.
Media: Watercolor, Ink, Collage

Tuva Page Stephens has studied art from many nationally and internationally known watercolorists: John Salminen, Cheng-Khee Chee, Jean Grastorf, George James, Frank Webb, Gerald Brommer, Judi Betts, Laurin McCracken, and Tony Couch. In 2010 she was the featured watercolorist for her signature figurative/character portraits on Tennessee Crossroads which can be viewed on YouTube. Thirty-three years of teaching high school art and directing drama productions involving designing award winning sets have been her best teacher.

Tuva retired in May of 2009 to pursue her dreams of becoming an established competitive professional artist. At the age of 15 her serious study of art began while in high school through Art Instruction School, Minneapolis, Minnesota. She graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin with a BS in Secondary Education in English and Art. She is enjoying the freedom of painting as much as possible now and prides herself in painting a variety of subject matter. She has studied with and/or received awards from the following internationally known artists: Tony Couch, Judi Betts, Gerald Brommer (2), Charlotte Huntley, Cheng Khee Chee (3) , Frank Webb, Paul Jackson, Laurin McCracken, Ted Minchin, Jean Grastorf, George James, John Salminen, Eric Wiegardt, Don Andrews, Jeannie Dobie, Fred Graff, Steve Rogers, Joan Blackburn, Mary Ann Beckwith, and others. She participates in art competitions throughout Tennessee and nationally known organizations in other states.

Stephens is the Past President (2010-12) of Tennessee Watercolor Society. In 2006, 2008 and 2010 her work was accepted into the 30th, 31st and 32nd TnWS Society Biennial Exhibitions in Clarksville, Knoxville and Chattanooga. She received Signature Membership in May 2010. She is also an active member of the Jackson Art Association (JAA), Gibson Co.Visual Art Association (GCVAA), Memphis Germantown Art League (MGAL Platinum Star Status), SW(Southern Watercolor Society--18 states) 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 Exhibitions, KWS (Kentucky Watercolor Society) 2010, 2011, 2012; Watercolor Society of Alabama National Exhibition/Award Winner 2011, 2012 and Recognition of Excellence (online competition) 2011, Award Winner 2012 and a Sustaining Member AWS, NWS and TWSA. New member of Missouri Watercolor Society. Some of her work can be seen locally at Court Square Arts and Antiques in Trenton, Tn.

While teaching art has been Tuva's career over the past 33 years, she has managed to win numerous shows since 2001. She now is branching out and her artwork is gaining acceptance in many national shows due to encouragement of some of the artists listed above. As Grant Writer for the Gibson County Visual Arts Association, she is especially enjoying meeting artists from across Tennessee. Tuva is perfectly happy to paint for the joy of painting, but must admit it is fun to win shows and sell her work. She resides in McKenzie, Tn. with her supportive husband, manager and critic, Don Stephens and their beloved cream colored Persian, "Eli".
