Biography

Terra Chapman was born in San Diego, California, but she did not remain there for long. She has traveled and lived in many places including Texas, Virginia, Portugal, and Italy. Her fascination with art began at an early age when she was first able to hold a pencil in her hand. When she was seven years old she took private lessons from Sandy Pratt, an artist in Baja, California. She was instantly captivated by oil painting and thus commenced her life long relationship with painting. To her it was the was the texture of the paints right out of the tube, the sweet scent of the turpentine, the bounce of the canvas, and the image that miraculously arose in front of her. Her interest in painting and the arts has only increased with time.

Terra continued taking private lessons with various teachers up until the year she began her academic training in Florence, Italy in 2008. When had been searching for higher education in the arts, it was one of her private instructors, Dimitar Krustev from Bulgaria, who pointed Terra in the direction of Florence, Italy and to its classical academies of fine art. Terra found a second home in Florence and the Academies there, were she found the knowledge and community that she had been looking for. She began the full time academic program at Angel Academy of Art in 2008.

Terra attended Angel Academy for two years and became a student teacher during her last year. She loved teaching at the academy and began instructing workshops of her own as well as hosting private lessons. Terra transferred to Florence Academy of Art in 2010 and remained there until she graduated in December of 2011. At the Florence Academy she learned many additional painting techniques and experimented with the figure in sculpture.

After graduating from the Florence Academy Terra felt she could still benefit from further study at the Academies in Florence. In June 2013, she completed one year of study at the Russian Academy of Art, a sister school to the Russian Academy of Art in Saint Petersburg.

Terra began accepting commissions when she was tweleve years old, ranging from landscapes to portraits. During and in-between her academic studies she has had studio shows, group shows, and solo exhibitions at various galleries and organizations, including the Annigoni museum in Florence and the Medlin Art Gallery in Leesburg Virginia.

An Artist Statement, by the artist.

My life has always been consumed by art, it has kneaded, shaped, prodded, and passionately influenced the course of my life. It has taken me down roads I never thought imaginable. I experience the process of painting as calming and meditative, but it is at the same time extremely exhilarating and thrilling. For me, art is a way to open my eyes wide to the world, it is a means of trying to understand both the world around and within me. While painting, any mindless chatter falls away and all that is left is the captivating beauty of the subject and everything that it represents.

For me, art is something that functions with the same processes and systems as found in nature, it is a part of nature. Nature willingly gives the humble artist abundant material to work from. Art should posses a timeless quality and this is something that I strive for in all of my works. It is then that the works can be admired by all generations and understand that it is connected with something within them as well. I am primarily interested in working with the human figure. What is so arresting and puzzling and fascinating about the human figure are the same as those found in the universe. For inspiration and guidance I have only to look around me to nature. I am constantly visiting museums to study the masterful works of past artists, such as Jose de Ribera, Caravaggio, and Titian.

"Art is contemplation. It is the pleasure of the mind which searches into nature and there defines the spirit of which Nature herself is animated"- Auguste Rodin
