Whether working in pastel or oil, his masterful grasp of his subjects' core elements draw us into the slice of life he chooses to paint. - Informed Collector

Subject matters to me. I search for unusual subjects and new perspectives on familiar scenes.
Collectors Say:
When I view your paintings, I feel, that your art has something alive, something which is pulled from reality. The colours, the emotions, but much more the eye for details--this is what makes your art something special.
--Burkard Schliessmann, concert pianist
Other Artists Say:
"The Ketchup Trilogy" conveys such a vibrant and complete slice-of-life narrative. The composition is filled with an abundance of information--without feeling overwhelmed with details. --Susan Ogilvie, Juror, Landscape & Interior, Pastel Journal April 2008
Workshops for 2013 are now listed. See the workshop page.
I am very thrilled to announce that Flying the Beam (pastel 16" x 20") was chosen as a finalist in the Art Renewal Center's annual salon.
The Fish Cleaners, pastel on board 18" x 18" was recently on view in New York as part of the Pastel Society of America's 40th Anniversary show, Enduring Brilliance. It was chosen for a purchase award, and will be on display January - March 3 2013 at the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown OH with other selected works from the New York show.
Sorolla's Studio: On Wings of Art was given Honorable Mention in the Oil Painters of America Online Showcase for fall 2012. http://www.opaonlineshowcase.com/winners/92 Judge Kathleen Dunphy said: I must admit that any depiction of Sorolla's studio would get my attention, but the execution of this piece elevates the scene from just a snapshot to a work of art. Lovely indication of Sorolla's paintings in the background. Great design- the triangulation of the bright white color keeps the eye moving through the painting. That half-figure on the left looking into the painting is a bold and effective addition.
Shiplock Geometry, pastel on panel 12" x 12"
honored with First Place in Plein Air Richmond, 2012.
Biography
Ray Hassard was born and raised in the New York area. Growing up, he attended Saturday classes at the Museum of Modern Art, and took community education art classes at local schools and art organizations. He studied at Pratt Institute, and, more importantly, spent hours and hours at New York's wonderful museums and galleries. Ray moved to Buffalo NY in 1977, where he was awarded several commissions, including one for a 45 foot long wall piece in the subway system the city was building. In 1985, he and his partner came to Cincinnati and became co-owners and publishers of American Record Guide, a classical music CD review magazine.
Ray teaches pastels at Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center in Covington KY, the Women's Art Club in Cincinnati, and leads workshops around the country. He belongs to the Ohio Plein Air Society, Indiana Plein Air Painters Association, and is a signature member of the Cincinnati Art Club. He was awarded signature and Master Pastellist status by the MidAmerica Pastel Society in 2008, and served on the Board of the Ohio Plein Air Society for two terms. He was given Signature Member status by the Pastel Society of America in 2011.
Besides art, Ray's major interests include contra dancing, roller coasters (Ohio is a great state for them!), and travel. He has visited over 75 countries, with India being his favorite. Three painting trips there with friend and fellow artist Debra Joyce Dawson led to a joint show of their paintings of India and Bhutan at the Richmond Art Museum in January 2010. In that same year Ray painted in Spain, France and Croatia. He has just returned (2011) from painting in Paris.
Ray is represented by Oxford Gallery , Rochester NY, Brandt-Roberts Gallery in Columbus OH, and the Eisele Gallery in Cincinnati. He was the subject of a feature article in the October 2010 Pastel Journal magazine.

Upcoming Events and Exhibits
Pastel Demo Plaza Art Materials 5/18/2013-5/18/2013 Reception: ()
I will be demonstrating painting a pastel painting in the Plaza Art Materials store in Montgomery. I will talk a bit about grounds to paint on, underpainting processes, differences in pastels and how they affect the finished piece. We'll also touch on framing and fixatives. May 18, 2013 from 1-4 pm.
Upcoming Workshops
Photoshop/Elements for Artists(0) Cincinnati Art Club 5/25/2013-5/25/2013
This one day intensive Photoshop/Elements workshop will give you what you need for basic digital image manipulation. We will cover sizing, scaling, resolution, formats to save the image in, basics of color and value correction and more. Notes will be handed out, so you can refer to them later when it is all just a confused blur. Participants should have a laptop computer with them with either Photoshop or Elements installed. Both programs will be covered in the workshop.

Plein Air from the Ground Up(0) Wethersfield CT 7/29/2013-8/1/2013
Working en plein air can be very challenging, but it is always worth the effort. Ray will share with you a wealth of information on the subject, as well as the overall principles of painting. We will also have a "slide show" of contemporary and classical paintings demonstrating important facets of plein air painting. We will spend a good amout of time on the most important thing: getting off to a good start. Nature offers us a wealth of fascinating subjects, but we need to limit what we pick from the buffet or suffer from visual indigestion. With plein air painting, it is important to learn what to leave out so we can avoid painting those pesky leaves that are so attractive, when we actually want to paint the forest. This workshop is for all media, but since Ray is primarily a pastellist, demos will be done in that media.

There are still openings in this 4 day workshop for all levels. The cost will be $350/student for the workshop. Deposit fee is $75 with the remainder due July 9. We will be meeting in North Creek NY at the base of Gore Mountain, a historic ski town in the Adirondacks. North Creek is undergoing a renaissance and there are excellent restaurants, delightful shops that feature the work of local artisans, tours to the mountain, art shows, whitewater rafting and many other outdoor and indoor activities. There are several lovely B&Bs and hotels to choose from for your accomodations, and I'll send a list of them on request. Some will offer special rates for this workshop, I'm told.
We have a lot of painting choices for location and will be 1/2 hour away from both Lake George, and the smaller, yet still gorgeous, Schroon Lake, Thirteenth Lake, the Hudson River, the North Creek, streams, the Schroon River and mountainous views. Rainy weather is not expected (he said with his fingers crossed), but if it shows up, we will have a place to work indoors and we will work from photos--I will have a lot of them with me, students may bring some of their own.
Call or email Ray for further information.

Beginner and Intermediate Pastels(0) Cincinnati Art Club 9/7/2013-9/8/2013
Basics and beyond in pastels. We will talk about materials and methods. That is, the different kinds and brands of pastels on the market today, the different papers and panels available, and some of the ways to work with pastels that go beyond the traditional, eg. underpainting, using water, etc. We will touch on framing methods and photographing your artwork, too. Ray will demo each day, and participants will be encouraged to experiment and have fun working in different ways.

Plein Air from the Ground Up(0) New Braunfels, TX 10/11/2013-10/14/2013
This plein air workshop will be at centered around the 1863 Farmers Road B&B (http://www.1863farmersroadbandb.com) run by Mary McIntosh in New Braunfels TX. Dates are Oct 11-13 with an optional fourth day (Oct 14) at the students' discretion. It will cover the basics of working on site, from finding subject mattter to working quickly to capture a scene, with many stops along the way to cover other subjects. There will be a slide presentation of paintings by many artists covering the five important subjects of Big Shapes, Composition, Values, Color, and Edges. I will do at least 2 demos in pastel. The workshop is geared to pastellists, but oil or acrylic painters may also sign up. We will have an exercise or two that will help, and we will enjoy daily summing up and critique sessions.
For more information about the actual workshop, contact Ray at ray@rayhassard.com, or 513 941 1116
For more about the location and accomodations, contact Mary McIntosh as listed above.

Making a Public Scene in Pastel(90) Pendleton Center, Rising Sun Indiana 11/10/2013-11/11/2013
People in public, engaging in everyday activities, can make for great paintings. We are surrounded by wonderful but overlooked subjects, from farmers markets to supermarkets, shopping malls and airports to restaurants and city streets, but the confusion and constant movement can be overwhelming. We will learn how to find those great pictures out there and how to tackle and overcome the problems involved. Students should bring their own photos of public scenes to paint from, but Ray will also have many of his own available. Day 1 We will discuss working from photographs, the difficulties of keeping it fresh and overlooking the wealth of details. With an image in mind, we will learn about transferring the picture to the painting surface, blocking in and simplifying the image to emphasise the focal point and starting with a division into big shapes and lights and darks. There will be a morning demo emphasizing the drawing and block-in stages, and in the afternoon students will paint, getting a good start on a painting.. Day 2 We will start with a "slide show" of good examples of paintings, both contemporary and older, that show basic aspects of painting. A brief demo will complete the painting begun yesterday, showing the next and final stages of a work. Students will have the afternoon to paint, either to finish up a work in progress or start a new one. The workshop will end with a show/critique of participants' work and summing up with time for any final questions
