Critic Carl Little has called my work 'ghostly', which is a concise description of what I do. My work appears incomplete, unfocused and unclear, which requires the viewer to create their own narrative of what is going on in the piece they are looking at. I use my own collection of more than 11,000 images of antique family, found and appropriated photographic images to make works of experience meaningful to myself and grounded in the context of my own life.
In starting a new piece, I find a photo that attracts me- usually 3 figures, umbrellas, horses, boats. I scan the photo into my computer (If not already on my hard drive) and begin working on it using a digital Intous drawing tablet with Picture Window (re-sizing, cropping), Adobe Elements (adding, removing or changing the colors) and Corel Painter (best for make pixels behave like oils).
My medium has changed over the past 52 years, from oils to acrylics to a large format inkjet printer, but my subject matter has pretty much remained unchanged. I am currently using hand-painted newsprint as my support upon which I print and re-print images using a 44 inch Epson archival printer (this is not suitable for everyone, as you must be good with mechanical problems when using a printer like this). I usually mist the 33x38 inch print with water to force the inks to run. When the paper is dry, I gesso it over lightly and re-print the image. I work this way until I find the composite seems to be finished. This may take several days to a few weeks. I build a 30x30 stretched canvas, trim the newsprint to fit and using acrylics glue the print to the canvas. I use acrylic gel glazes, pencil, gesso, and sometimes stencils to finish the piece.
