It is gorgeous up here in Ojai - fruit trees are blooming and mustard
is knee high.
The smell of blooming chaparral and citrus is intoxicating!
Join me in Ventura at Red Brick Gallery for a reception for the
Nature's Mosaic Show on March 23, 4-7pm.
I've done a collage series about this tender time of year
that I'm really excited about!
My husband and I are downsizing this Spring so check the schedule
for the changes in classes. I won't be teaching out of my studio after April,
(I won't have my studio-yikes!)
but will be teaching at Red Brick Gallery in Ventura and at the Ojai Art Center
Biography
Watercolor is alive, the 96% of me that is liquid resonates with it.
Working with it is call and response, a private kirtan.
Something within urges expression,
we offer it to the brush.
The paint makes a statement (often unexpected!)
Curious and enthralled we respond.
Movement gets going.
This immediacy and vulnerablity is what I want visible in my watercolors, so I look for ways to get rid of the mat and glass. I rarely work on paper anymore. Instead, I work on specially prepared canvas so that the work remains more accessible. I am concerned about catching a moment in time, about the fleeting, ephemeral nature of even archetypal images and icons. I am not painting for posterity but to celebrate this transitory life. My work often contains handmade paper, fabric and thread as well as this most fragile of all paints, watercolor.
For subject matter I follow my heart. Right now I'm moving between three ongoing themes - ranch life and the people who do it, my love affair with Italy, and stories of the nest. These works encompass a variety of techniques - they are predominantly watercolor on canvas but some include ink resist or collage as well. I use the technique that allows the voice of the piece to speak most clearly.
My studio is in Ojai. I am a Signature Member of the California Gold Coast Watercolor Society, which has now joined with the Buena Ventura Art Association, the Santa Barbara Art Association, and a founding member of The Ojai Group. My work can regularly be seen at Masserella's Firehouse Pottery and Gallery on Montgmoery St. in Ojai and in my studio by appointment - 805 657-3525.
