A viewer of my paintings wrote to me recently and had this to say, "Your landscapes are so evocative, for me so emotional. You have a gift for portraying more
than realism in your landscapes-not something fantastical, but something simultaneously approachable and not. Not everyone will do what you do, but so many of
us are deluded or ambitious enough to aspire to." This very generous and kind
statement describes exactly how I would hope that my art is received by those who view
it. I try to live up to this ideal with each painting.
One of the reasons that I'm a visual artist is that it has always been more
effective for me to share my excitement about the natural world through visual means,
painting or drawing, than it has been through writing or speaking about it. My love of
the land, the Midwest in particular, and my desire to communicate that deep seeded
love is what drives my work. Painting is the vehicle for my expression of that love. My
purpose is not to replicate the specific or dwell on the spectacular, as much as it is to
observe the specific and to discover the beauty in the seemingly unspectacular. My
goal is to paint a sense of place and what that means to me as an artist.
Typically my work is painted on location during all seasons of the year. The
paintings created on location are painted on a smaller scale in oils. The smaller scale of
these paintings allows me to capture those fleeting moods, and quickly changing light or
weather effects. I've painted this way, en plein air, for many years now, and have
completed many, many hundreds of these studies. Most of these small paintings are
painted either on linen or primed board and are completed in one to one and half hours.
The studies represent my immediate reaction to the subject matter and are a record of
that short period in time. Just as importantly, they build an enormous library of visually recallable
information that is indispensable to me in the studio. When working on larger paintings in
the studio, studies and the memory of the time and place are
invaluable to me and form the basis for much of my studio work.
My most recent work has been to create large landscape paintings, as large in
scale as those painted in the studio, entirely on location. Some of these paintings are
completed in one session, others are completed over a longer period of time lasting
several sessions. The challenge that working from life in this way presents is
overridden by the benefit to my understanding of light and color on the landscape, and
the authenticity that it brings to my paintings. I foresee my art continuing to move in this
direction, major works mostly completed on site.

OPA Workshop: Plein Air with Marc Hanson(545) Crooked Tree Arts Center - Petosky, MI 6/24/2013-6/27/2013
The Oil Painters of America’s first ever Summer Salon will be hosted by the Crooked Tree Arts Center during the summer of 2013! On display will be over 400 paintings from across the United States representing the best of oil painting in the country. Crooked Tree Arts Center will be transformed into a salon style exhibition space with a summer full of fine art, lectures, workshops and special events.
I'm thrilled to announce that as a part of this OPA (Oil Painters of America) event in Petosky, MI at the Crooked Tree Arts Center, I will be conducting a 4 day Plein Air Painting Workshop!
This will be a chance to paint this beautiful part of Michigans' west coast shoreline and surrounding landscape. If you've never been there, be prepared for an amazing beauty that will surprise you. Overlooking the shores of Lake Michigan's Little Traverse Bay in the northern tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula you'll find Petoskey Michigan, a quaint resort community with unmatched beauty and charm. Petoskey has been a destination for resorters for more than 100-years and for multiple generations. People return to soak in the rich views, breathe the clean air, eat at world-class restaurants and shop in the specialty shops and boutiques of its historic downtown.
We'll spend the four days painting the area. I'll be incorporating several different exercises during the workshop to help you with many of the basics of painting... Concept, Value, Color, and Drawing. That along, with my own daily demonstrating to show you what I expect of you each day, and a lot of one on one easel critique and support, should make the days spent together an educational and enjoyable time painting the area.
This workshop is geared towards painters who've had some experience. The Crooked Tree Arts Center has suggestions for classes for artists who are new to Plein Air painting. Please visit the website for more information. Supply lists and other info available through the Crooked Tree Arts Center... .
I hope to see you there.

From the Field to the Studio(550) Madeline Island School of the Arts 7/15/2013-7/19/2013
I'd be pleased if you'd join me at the Madeline Island School of the Arts on Madeline Island, WI. Madeline Island is one of the chain of Islands known as the Apostle Islands, most of which are part of the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. It's a pristinely beautiful location, only accessible by ferry.
MISA (Madeline Island School of the Arts) is located on an old, historic farmsite just outside of La Pointe, WI on the island. The farm has been lovingly improved and restored into a state of the art facility for teaching. There are two large studios, specifically designed as art studios, a main building/conference center for multi-media events and as a cafeteria. In addition to all of that, there have been 4 buildings/dorms built that accomodate students who are on campus to take the classes. Part of the experience that is so magnificent is for the students to stay on campus so that we have a week totally engulfed by our mission to study and paint.
Hope to see you there...
