In my recent works I use my collection of photographs taken locally and while traveling to inspire me. I oftentimes combine photographs to create a more interesting painting. My work reflects the elements that attract me to the scene, and its emotional impact. I work in both pastels and watercolor. I enjoy the translucency, spontaneity and fluidity of watercolor. Using techniques such as glazing, masking and spattering I can achieve the desired effect. Working with pastels allows the layering of colors on top of colors. Both methods let me present different perspectives and feelings to the viewer. I prefer strong contrasts of color and varying materials. It is especially appealing and visually interesting to paint beautiful soft flowers in conjunction with geometric windows or doors. Many of my pictures place the soft edges of natural objects against the rigid lines of architectural structures. This contrast accentuates the visually intriguing elements of each. I am both an artist and a teacher. For thirty plus years I taught in the public schools. I have been an art teacher on Long Island, New York and in Glenview School District #34 in Glenview, IL. Recently I have retired from teaching and I paint in my home studio and showcase my work in a variety of local and National shows and galleries.
Ever since I was a young child I have always been interested in art and enjoyed expressing myself with variety of art materials. I went to the High School of Music and Art in New York City, a school for students talented in music and art. Studying art education at Tyler School of Fine Arts, Old Dominion University (B.S. in Art Education) and Queens College, City University of New York (M.S. in Art Education) I began a 32 year career as an artist and educator. Currently I am retired and enjoy painting in my studio, taking art workshops, and exhibiting my paintings.
I have exhibited at museums, universities, galleries, private clubs and corporations throughout the Chicago area. During the last 2 years I have been commissioned by Dick Blick Art Materials to paint original pastels that they use in their worldwide advertising. Throughout the year I participate in juried national and international gallery shows in both watercolor and pastels. In the summer months I show my work at local juried art fairs.
