Biography
Kohlene Hendrickson was born in 1958 in California. She studied Fine Arts at the Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles. She worked for 12 years as an illustrator and art director, then returned to fine arts by studying fresco with Frederico Vigil and continued her study of fresco in Italy. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in the USA and in Europe. Her works belong to private and public collections in many countries and have been featured on television in the USA. She is an awarded artist. Kohlene now lives and works in Switzerland.
My attraction to ancient painting techniques is the quality of their craftsmanship and the pure essence of the natural materials. Beeswax, resin, lime, sand, pigments, wood and water.
My perception of creativity changed radically after a strong shamanic experience. The message was « that only when you hold nothing fixed can true creativity enter ». I began pouring the paint rather than applying it with a paintbrush. In this process I am dancing between the hazard of the flowing paint and the edge of control. As in life, letting the flow of the universe enter and be directed with life's experience to temper the current.
Recently, I included my paintbrush again and have found my personal trinity including all parts of myself. Mind, primal energy and spirit.

Techniques anciennes de peinture et vision contemporaine
L'attirance de Kohlene pour les techniques anciennes de peinture tient à la qualité de l'artisanat et l'essence naturelle des matériaux employés tels que la cire d'abeille, la résine, la chaux, le sable, les pigments, le bois, l'eau.
Elle a eu le privilège d'étudier l'art de la fresque avec Frederico Vigil de Santa Fe (New Mexico) qui a reçu l'héritage direct de Diego Riviera pour avoir étudié avec les apprentis de Diego. Quelques années plus tard, alors qu'elle suivait un atelier sur l'art de la fresque près de Rome, en Italie, elle découvrit l'art de l'encaustique et s'essaya à cette technique. Très vite, elle commença à développer ses propres méthodes d'application qui continuent d'évoluer constamment.
Sa carrière professionnelle à Los Angeles en tant qu'artiste visuel l'emmena à collaborer avec la télévision, des compagnies de production de films, des galeries d'art, l'industrie de la mode ainsi que de grands noms tels que Geffen Records, Warner Brothers.
Après 20 ans passés à Los Angeles, elle habite aujourd'hui dans un village médiéval en Suisse connu pour l'extraordinaire positionnement de ses méridiens dont l'énergie attire artistes, guérisseurs et hommes spirituels depuis fort longtemps.
Non seulement le style de vie de Kohlene a complètement changé depuis son installation en Europe mais ses moyens d'expression ne cessent de se développer et de s'enrichir. En 2007, elle s'initia à la méditation traditionnelle chamanique ce qui explosa ses perceptions de la créativité. Elle se mit à verser la peinture plutôt qu'à l'appliquer avec un pinceau. Dans ce processus, elle danse entre la fin hasardeuse de la peinture et la limite du contrôle. Comme dans la vie, elle laisse le flot de l'univers aller et venir tout en étant dirigée par l'expérience de la vie pour moduler le présent.
Learn to paint with pigmented beeswax, a very rich and polyvalant medium. The workshops will include the formulas for making the paint, adhesion by heating and diverse applications. One can paint, reheat, remove, scratch and play endlessly with this very flexible medium without waiting for the long drying hours needed for oil paint. Once familiar with the technique the possibilities are as diverse as the artists today...the surfaces can be smooth, textural, thick, transparent and even sculptural.
PRIVATE WORKSHOPS- six hours of private instruction including how to set up your own encaustic atelier.
By appointment- Fr. 425 including materials.
