Biography

Painting in Tuscany

Growing up on the side of Missionary Ridge, Durinda experienced the scenic beauty of the Chattanooga area. She filled sketchbooks with drawings of nature and her imagination. Encouraged by her high school art teacher, Durinda was selected for the Georgia Governor's Honors Program in art as a sophomore. After receiving her master's degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, she taught classes in gifted education in Georgia public schools, served as art department chairperson at The McCallie School in Chattanooga, and taught as an adjunct professor at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. For the last four years she has been teaching from her studio as well as weekly classes at Townsend Atelier in Chattanooga, and also instructing workshops throughout the southeast region and in France and Italy. Acting as Director of Visual Art for the Alabama Institute for Education in the Arts, she gets the opportunity to work with Alabama educators every summer with art lessons they can incorporate into their curriculums. She enjoys the role of instructor as much as that of professional artist. Working with students gives her inspiration for her work and allows her to share her love of art with others.

Durinda finds inspiration for many of her paintings in European and Southern architecture and landscapes. Many studies done on site (en plein air) are transformed in the studio into larger master works of art. She travels abroad every year to paint in different areas of France and Italy. Working in both watercolor and oil, she uses the medium that best suits the subject. To enhance her professional growth, she has studied with master artists such as Wayne Wu aws, Tom Lynch, Jack Beal, and David Leffel opa. She is a signature member of Georgia, Tennessee, and Louisiana Watercolor Societies, a member of the American Impressionist Society, Oil Painter's of America, Plein Air Florida, Plein Air Georgia, and Women Painters of the Southeast. As an invited artist for the last eight years, she paints at Walt Disney's World's Epcot Flower Festival every spring along with eleven other artists from across the country.

Her award-winning works have been in numerous international and national exhibitions and are represented in corporate and private collections both in the US and abroad. Durinda accepts a limited number of commissions yearly and enjoys working with clients to provide them the artwork that they envision. She maintains a studio in northwest Georgia where she lives with her life partner, William, and their feline companion, Clarice. She can be found in the winter in Siesta Key, Florida.

Plein Air Painting in Venice(2275)
Venice, Italy
10/5/2013-10/12/2013

Join me in the City of Love to paint, sketch, photograph, eat, drink, well... you know!!  This week will be designed with you in mind!  Bring the materials you want to work with and I will help you record the sites of Venice!  I will provide you with a handmade sketchbook to use for journaling, painting, scrapbooking, or whatever.  We will focus on the wonderful shapes and colors of the city of canals.  We will visit the other islands known for lace-making and glass-blowing.  Want to bring an non-artist with you?  We have a special price:  $1975 with no instruction but still going with the group.  If you register before 12/31/2012, get the discounted price of $2275 for the week! We will be staying near the famed San Marco square.  Single rooms are available.  Price includes breakfasts and five dinners.  During the day, we will be out and about and eat in the lovely cafes through the city.

This is my third workshop with Il Chiostro and I can tell you they treat you like royalty!  Make your registration early to ensure your place in the group.  Contact me if you have any questions about supply lists or clothes to take, travel arrangements, etc.  I have been to Venice once before and absolutely LOVE it and can't wait to return!

Plein Air Painting in Provence(2990)
Provence, France
5/25/2014-6/1/2014

Join me in painting and exploring the Provence region of France!

I had such a great experience with the workshop in Provence in 2012 that I am booking it again!!  We will paint daily in quaint villages, beautiful meadows, and olive groves.  The trip includes your stay at an authentic farmhouse with its own private bath plus your meals and wine!!  We will visit sites such as St Remy where Van Gogh stayed for a year and the abbey that grows the lavender you see on all the postcards.  No experience is necessary in painting.  Nonartist friends and spouses are welcome to join us.  They will be treated to tours of the area by our host Jackie while we paint.  Registration is now open.  I will be happy to answer any questions.  This is one experience you will treasure for a lifetime!
