"Daggi Wallace captures the soul of her subjects and the essence of the moment in her masterful pastels."
- Informed Collector June 2010
"Wallace creates in luscious painted pastels, forming sensously realistic individual portraits."
By Roberta Carasso, ArtScene Magazine, California
"Fine Art is that in which the hand, the head and the heart of man go together"
John Ruskin
A Master Circle Member of the International Association of Pastel Societies, Master Pastelist of the Pastel Society of America and Signature Member of the Pastel Society of the Southwest, Daggi Wallace is a pastel painter born in 1962, in Berlin, Germany, currently living near Los Angeles, CA. Primarily self-taught, she had her first painting lesson at age five and continues her studies through workshops and classes by nationally known artists as well as many museum visits during her frequent travels to Europe.
The artist's work is in numerous American and European collections including the permanent collection of the Wichita Center for the Arts in Wichita, KS.
Her long list of commission portrait clients include Grammy Award winning blues musician Buddy Guy, whose portrait she was commissioned to paint for his 71st birthday in 2007.

The artist's paintings have been featured in print many times, such as the International Artist Magazine, The Pastel Journal, books such as Best of America Pastel Artists by Kennedy Publishing, a surf art book in the U.S. and surf magazines in Germany and France, a children's book by Pelican Publishing, Pockets children magazine and American Airlines First Class Menus. The Dallas Morning News has published three feature articles on her work, as have several German newspapers.
Focusing on the human face and figure, the artist "captures the soul of her subjects and the essence of the moment in her masterful pastels." (Informed Collector online magazine, June 2010). Roberta Carasso of ArtScene Magazine said: "Wallace creates in luscious painted pastels, forming sensuously realistic individual portraits."
In 2010 Wallace started a non-profit project called "Moni's Kids", painting portraits of children in need and using the proceeds to deliver aid to the children portrayed. The first series of Haitian children was exhibited in Miami in November 2010.

Artist Statement
Painting portraits to me is all about exploring our shared humanity, the connection we have to each other and our common Source. Each face tells a story and communicating this to others is my goal. Strong lighting and composition, as well as social consciousness and relevance are important to my work. Motherhood, women's and children's issues are of special interest to me.
My most recent work deals with issues facing today's teens and is of personal relevance to me as a mother of two daughters. I like to create images that provoke thoughts and emotions in the viewer.
My paintings might begin with a visual trigger that elicit an immediate reaction from me such as the pattern of light and shadow defining the form of a face or the bright color of a shirt reflecting off skin tones. An intense gaze or tilt of the head offering a glimpse of the subject's feelings can prompt me to paint a portrait or I may compose an image from a preconceived idea, a story I want to tell. Recently I have included text or single words in my paintings, ranging from graffiti to precisely rendered font. At times I intend it to be easily legible, at other times I like to add mystery to the piece by deliberately blurring them. The words may be inspired or even written by the subject portrayed, as was the case with Cool Breeze of the Rhythm which was based on a poem composed by the model. The poem is included in the painting yet almost completely hidden in the abstract background.
With my Up Close & Personal series I use zooming and cropping extensively, capturing strong emotions in just fragments of the human face while putting special emphasis on the eyes. Bringing the viewer into such extreme proximity with the subject creates an intimacy not otherwise achieved. The bond of common emotions we share as human beings is thereby emphasized and highlighted.
My series of blues musicians allowed me to further explore the connection between all artists and their muses. Capturing them in mid-song I hope to allow the viewer to stop and share the singer's moment of deep emotion and inspiration.
My paintings of surfers was inspired not only by the beauty of the ocean's colors but by the interaction between man and nature. The surfers' twisted, angular bodies juxtaposed against the flowing, moving waves create a natural abstract design that is pure joy to observe. Spending many hours on the beaches of California and Hawaii photographing the surfers becomes a kind of meditation, a spirituality I hope to pass along.
In my non-profit Moni's Kids portraits the often overlooked, the invisible of our society are given center stage. I aim to make visible their quiet dignity, the grace and joy they display under the most difficult circumstances. Living among us in our homes, even if only in paintings, they remind us of our blessings and connection to each other as human beings. My hope is to bring the world outside our own little circles closer.
While my style is representational I give it a contemporary touch by adding texture to the painting surface, using bold colors and contrast and leaving some areas of the painting less defined.
My latest pastels on sanded paper are mounted on stretcher frames like oil paintings and presented without mats under TruVue glass which not only adds to the modern feel, but gives them an appearance very similar to oil or acrylic paintings.
