North Alabama is right in the path of tornado alley, and it wasn't unusual to see storm cellars dug out of the hillsides out behind people's houses. I personally never spent any time in one, and am so glad I didn't. I'm thinking spiders and all kinds of unknown sqirmy things in the dark.
