Mari Jo is happiest when surrounded by babies. As orphans she and her older brother Jimmy were brought to New Life by missionaries. She does not remember her past or family history and her age is unknown but assumed to be around 14. She is attending first grade and is a hard worker. While shy, she becomes animated around the younger children and even helps spoon feed a disabled little girl she especially likes.
