In December 2003, I fell in love with Vernazza and its welcoming residents. It is one of the five villages of the Italian Riviera district of Cinque Terre. In October 2011, 29 inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours causing severe flooding and a massive mudslide. Twelve feet of mud covered many of the businesses and homes. The hardy people of the town are digging out and attempting to rebuild their village. This painting will be offered by Squash Blossom Gallery in Colorado Springs during Rick Steves' appearance there Wednesday, March 7, for the PBS fundraiser, and $1,200 (one-half of the purchase price) will go to Save Vernazza, a non-profit organization established by residents to help restore the homes and businesses of the village. Visit Rick Steves website, www.ricksteves.com/news/cinque-terre/cinque-terre-disaster.htm to learn more about how you can help.
