My goal as an artist is to paint with freshness, gusto and spontaneity. I'm attracted to the dramatic, and unique point of view in my subject matter. I look for high levels of contrast, intriguing shadows, and especially juicy and interesting colors to interpret. I hope that viewers of my art sense that I was having a great time when I was painting and that I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve and did it on the first pass!

I am an avid plein air and studio oil painter of primarily Hawaiian landscapes and beachscapes. Above all else, I am an impressionist and a Pacific colorist, drawing endless inspiration wherever I go whether it be in these beautiful Hawaiian Islands or elsewhere. Painting brings me great satisfaction and joy. I hope that my enthusiasm and excitement for my subject communicates visually in every painting I create. That is my measure of success.
I derive my technique from the plein air school and paint ala prima whenever possible. To keep my work fresh and exciting, I value initial impressions. I'm attracted to the dramatic, and unique point of view in my subject matter. I look for high levels of contrast, intriguing shadows, and especially juicy and interesting colors to interpret. I strive to make my paintings look effortless and dynamic, as though I got it right on the first pass – the right value, the right color and the right composition. I also strive to engage viewers by my interpretation of and passion for the subject, and hope they see something new even though they may have visited the spot many times before. And finally, I want viewers to sense the excitement and fun I experienced during the painting process.

Best In Show! 2007 PLEIN AIR PAINTERS OF HAWAII ANNUAL JURIED MEMBERS SHOW My painting "Drama at Low Tide" won the top award, First Place, at this year's show. Juried by impressionist Darrell Hill of the Big Island, the show was held at the Maui Hands Gallery, Paia, Maui in December.
TOP PRIZE "Final Moments" won top honors at the National League of American Pen Women's Honolulu Branch 2007 Biennial Art Show, juried by Marcia Morse. See it in my "Beachscapes and Landscapes" collection.

The Honolulu Club, Oahu's top fitness and spa club, along with work by other artists from The Gallery at Ward Centre. The club's bar and lounge is open to the public for live entertainment, M-F, 5-9 pm.
HONOLULU ACADEMY OF ARTS - SHOWCASE 2007 I was pleased again this year to be an invited guest at the Academy's annual benefit for children's programs. It was a very successful event, and a special "mahalo" to those people who purchased my paintings! The Academy of Arts, founded in 1927, is Hawaii's premier art museum with more than 50,000 works in their collection.

Biography
Susie Y. Anderson has been described as a "Pacific Colorist" with her own distinctive impressionistic style. She is a devoted and prolific oil painter, and is especially passionate about painting "en plein air" (outdoors). For her, this approach to creating a work revitilizes and renews her painting instincts. She is a juried member of Oil Painters of America (one of only four artists selected from Hawaii), and a Signature Member of the Plein Air Painters of Hawaii. Wherever she travels, Susie finds inspiration for her work, ranging from the dramatic beachscapes and landscapes of Hawaii to the vast farmlands and snow-covered mountains of Park City, Utah.
Susie's paintings are in numerous private and corporate collections world-wide, and in the permanent collections of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the City & County of Honolulu. She has won many honors for her work in juried shows including six Best-of-Show awards. She was juried into the prestigious "Artists of Hawaii" show at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and American Savings Bank selected 14 of her paintings for its 2001 wall calendar, and again in 2005. American Express Company showcased her talents as their featured artist at the 2002 ASTA World Travel Congress in Hawaii. Buzz's Steakhouse, a historic island eatery, commissioned a painting for its annual lunar calendar poster.
Susie has lived in Hawaii since 1969 and is a graduate of the University of Southern California holding degrees in fine arts and medical illustration. She worked for the University of Hawaii School of Medicine as a medical illustrator and graphic designer for 14 years. Susie then formed her own litigation graphics company, Visually Speaking Inc., before becoming a full-time, professional fine artist. Although landscapes and beachscapes interest her most at the moment, she enjoys an occasional figurative piece and plans on painting more on the mainland, attracted by a diversity of subjects and new challenges depicting the light and color of the western states. Whether in Hawaii or elsewhere, you might find Susie at inspiring locations—especially at sunrise or sunset—armed with paints and easel, interpreting the day`s remarkable light on canvas. She hopes you enjoy her work and always welcomes your e-mail and phone calls.
Susie is a member of The Gallery at Ward Centre, and is also represented by Nohea Gallery in Honolulu and Maui Hands and Kaukini Galleries on Maui. You may also find her reproductions at more than 20 locations island-wide, including the Honolulu Academy of Arts Gift Shop. In Park City, Utah, where Susie is a part-time resident, her reproductions may be found at Right Angle Framing and Right At Home.
