A viewer of my paintings wrote to me recently and had this to say, "Your landscapes are so evocative, for me so emotional. You have a gift for portraying more
than realism in your landscapes-not something fantastical, but something simultaneously approachable and not. Not everyone will do what you do, but so many of
us are deluded or ambitious enough to aspire to." This very generous and kind
statement describes exactly how I would hope that my art is received by those who view
it. I try to live up to this ideal with each painting.
One of the reasons that I'm a visual artist is that it has always been more
effective for me to share my excitement about the natural world through visual means,
painting or drawing, than it has been through writing or speaking about it. My love of
the land, the Midwest in particular, and my desire to communicate that deep seeded
love is what drives my work. Painting is the vehicle for my expression of that love. My
purpose is not to replicate the specific or dwell on the spectacular, as much as it is to
observe the specific and to discover the beauty in the seemingly unspectacular. My
goal is to paint a sense of place and what that means to me as an artist.
Typically my work is painted on location during all seasons of the year. The
paintings created on location are painted on a smaller scale in oils. The smaller scale of
these paintings allows me to capture those fleeting moods, and quickly changing light or
weather effects. I've painted this way, en plein air, for many years now, and have
completed many, many hundreds of these studies. Most of these small paintings are
painted either on linen or primed board and are completed in one to one and half hours.
The studies represent my immediate reaction to the subject matter and are a record of
that short period in time. Just as importantly, they build an enormous library of visually recallable
information that is indispensable to me in the studio. When working on larger paintings in
the studio, studies and the memory of the time and place are
invaluable to me and form the basis for much of my studio work.
My most recent work has been to create large landscape paintings, as large in
scale as those painted in the studio, entirely on location. Some of these paintings are
completed in one session, others are completed over a longer period of time lasting
several sessions. The challenge that working from life in this way presents is
overridden by the benefit to my understanding of light and color on the landscape, and
the authenticity that it brings to my paintings. I foresee my art continuing to move in this
direction, major works mostly completed on site.

Upcoming Events and Exhibits
Creative Convergence at Addison Art Gallery Addison Art Gallery - Orleans, MA - Cape Cod 1/7/2010-3/31/2010 Reception: 2/13/2010 (5:30pm - 7:30pm)
The workshop will include two days of demonstrations, lecture and instruction about how I paint in the landscape 'en plein air'. Each day will include a demo, group discussion about painting technique, materials and philosophy, and easel time for students along with easel critique. I like to concentrate on the basic elements of painting and will include an exercise or two to reinforce some of the basics that we all need to brush up on from time to time. There will be at least one black&white exercise, and the chance to paint a couple of full color studies as well. At the end of the two days there will be time for a discussion about your work and for questions as a group.
The workshop is open to oil and pastel painters of any level.

5 Day From The Field to the Studio Workshop(650) M Gallery of Fine Art - Sarasota, FL 5/24/2010-5/28/2010
I will demonstrate how I use field studies to work up a larger painting in the studio and for students to then do the same. The class is designed around a couple of days of field work, gathering information to be used for the larger paintings. We then move inside. We'll have a few days of studio work. During that time we will work on enlarging the studies selected.
The break down I envision looks something like this (weather dependent)...
2 days of field work (including some black & white value studies and small color comps), 1 day where I demo my entire process, and 2 days for students to work on the large studio paintings. Students should expect to get a good start on the final painting but may not finish it entirely. There will be plenty of assistance, critique, materials discussion and group conversation regarding the process.

'4th Annual' Taylors Falls Landscape Workshop(550) Marc's Studio - Taylors Falls, MN 8/9/2010-8/13/2010
I'm pleased to announce that I will be conducting my now... "4th Annual" Taylors Falls, MN Workshop
from my home studio base.
5 Day Landscape Painting Workshop - Taylors Falls, MN.
Please join me for 5 days in beautiful Taylors Falls, MN
for an on location landscape painting workshop.
Taylors Falls is an historic lumber town, with an entire neighboorhood
built between 1850 and 1865, 'Angel Hill', and is on the
National Historic Register. In addition the St.Croix River, a National
Wild and Scenic River, runs below town cutting through high stone cliffs
adorned with majestic white pine trees. Paintings are everywhere!
The purpose of this workshop is to reinforce the 'basics' in your approach to painting.
How to effectively structure a painting from 'concept' to the last brush stroke, re-examining
your understanding of 'value' relationships, how they relate to color relationships, and
how that understanding makes for a stronger painting. I will emphasize simplifying masses,
value, color, and details in your studies in order to more effectively communicate your idea
to the viewer.
This is going to be an intensive workshop for painters interested in working hard at improving upon
their painting knowledge. We have a good time and at the same time seriously approach the areas of
painting that we feel we need improvement. The small town atmosphere of Taylors Falls and the
'backyard' headquarters that we stage in, all lead to five days of an experience that will leave you with
new friends and a wonderful painting experience.
Demonstrations, exercises, plenty of painting time, critiques at the easel and as a group, will fill the 5 days
of this clinic.
The class is open to painters of any level working in oil paints or dry pastels.
We will be painting outside no matter the weather. And we may be painting in a Minnesota State Park,
requiring a car sticker for entrance. In case of wet weather, there are
covered pavilions to paint from. If you are a pastelist and paint in another more 'weather worthy'
medium, I'd suggest bringing it along in addition to the pastels just in case.
The dates are: Monday to Friday - August 10, 11, 12 & 13th, 2010.
Class meets: 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. A one hour break for lunch 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.
A Nocturne Night is a possibility depending on weather.
The cost is $550.00.00 with a non-refundable deposit of $150.00 dollars due at sign up to reserve a place in the class.
The Balance of $400.00 is due by the 26th of July, 2010.
*Cancellation Policy- No deposits refunded, unless I have to cancel the class for unavoidable reasons. If you have to cancel I need to be notified no less than 2 weeks before ( July 26th, 2010 ), the start date ( August 9th, 2010 ). Only then will the balance, if paid already, be refunded.
To sign up, email this announcement back to me with your mailing address, phone number and send a check for $150.00 to:
Marc R. Hanson
219 Basil St
Taylors Falls, MN 55084
I will send a confirmation back when the check has been received.
Sign ups are first come, first served and will be filled as deposits are received.
There is lodging in the area for those might come in from out of town and the info will be sent on request.
Thank you, I hope to see you in August.
