The Artist Says:

"Imagine a world without artists - how bleak it would be. An artist sees the world around them from a different angle, and it is up to them to present it so others can pause a moment and reflect. A respite from turmoil.

Art is my first language so I paint anything I am touched by and wish to communicate to others."

Art and painting are like breathing for me. Both must be done to really live life to the fullest. My work is inspired by all that is around me; the colours, the landscape, the people. I strive to put that life-force and energy into the paintings.

Having been a full time professional artist for almost 40 years has given me the opportunity to go to unusual places and meet many wonderful people along the way. I can't think of a better thing to do.

Collectors Say:

"There is something about this painting which moved me almost to tears when I saw it."
***
"I have seen the great paintings of the Old Masters and you truly demonstrate the Masters Touch."
***
"I have no words to explain my feelings when I saw them... They are all and each beautiful...I cannot say which is the one I like best...I congratulate you because of your excellent work."
***
"I am pleased to see your more recent works and to know you have developed so beautifully as an artist. I wish you continued success. You are very talented."

Dealers Say:

"Haist's subject matter portrays a deep understanding - women being women, streets being streets, nature being natural - through a mirror of simplicity....a simlicity that belies the skill required to achieve it.

This charismatic quality has won Diann Haist a very wide audience and an enviable hard core of collectors."

Other Artists Say:

"The nice use of impasto application and control of edges held my attention in this painting. The ability to use such intense background colors without becoming overly dominate brought me back to this painting time and again. It is strikingly bold without becoming too harsh." Critique by William Scott Jennings, Raymar Art Competition Judge, July 2008.

"Am SO happy with my beautiful print. You are such a gorgeous ARTIST." (Laury Dizengremel - award winning sculptor)
***
"Certainly, Diann Haist has come forward as an important voice of our time" H. P. Patton, A.S.A
(Artist, art critic, and former director of the Sear's Gallery, Chicago, Illinois)

Biography

At age seven, I discovered Degas. What colour, what composition - could there be anything more beautiful?

With crayons, I began to copy his paintings - was never any good at staying within the lines in a colouring book. At age nine, a favourite uncle who is an artist, gave me a table easel, sketch book, charcoal, canvas panels and a set of oil paint and brushes. This was a generous gift given as solace upon the sudden death of my mother, a gift which will forever sustain my gratitude, for it helped me forge my life's path. Now the Dega's were copied in oils!

I was fortunate to be growing up in a small town where some latter members of Canada's legendary Group of Seven artists sometimes came to paint - and within biking distance for me was the Doone School of Fine Art at the home of Canadian artist Henry Watson. Mr. Watson had been a friend of my grandfather's, but unfortunately, I did not get to meet him.

I was in awe of the plein air painters, although completely un-noticed by them as they tolerated my pestering questions of technique. I learned much from watching quietly, and longing to be a great painter too. Homework would be done at lightening speed so I could hurry into my precious spare bedroom 'studio' and try to replicate what I had seen the likes of A Y Jackson, or A J Casson painting in front of the local church! Those were the days. In later years, I was honoured to be able to have tea with the elderly A Y Jackson at The McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg Ontario. This is where I also discovered the Scandinavian Impressionists who had so inspired some of the Group of Seven artists.

My passion for painting has been helped and guided along the way by many great artists, including my Art College professors Audrey Garwood & Doris McCarthy, and earlier, my grade-school art teacher Sarah Rosenberg - afternoons in her home after school learning to mix colours properly.

As a truly visual artist, I respond to beauty - not just conventional beauty per se, but rhythm and grace, character and texture, colours that 'sing'! When painting human models, the shape and angle of muscles in necks and legs and backs can be exciting. Sometimes the least physically attractive is actually the most beautiful to me. This is character - lines in a face which tell a story, the way a person holds their hands. A gentle person usually has very relaxed and open hands, while an 'edgier' person would tend to curl the fingers into a fist, even while resting. I look, and notice, and record.

I prefer to paint from life, as this, especially in the early stages of one's career, is the greatest teacher of discipline in actually seeing what is there. When a model is not available, or there is a difficult pose, this is when I rely on my photographic references which have been accumulated, along with sketches, for just such an event.

In summer months, plein air painting is a joy for me, and tends to loosen up the stiffness of painting in the studio over the long winters, and since moving to Alaska from the East Coast, the winters seem even longer. Occasionally I work outdoors in the sub-zero temperatures, but the oil paint becomes very sticky after awhile which forces me back inside.

Because my response to the world around me is profound, I paint many subjects, primarily people and plein air landscapes, with a few still life's in the studio. It is rare that I would paint wildlife other than birds, which I admire greatly for their freedom and gracefulness. I have long been interested in Native Cultures, and since being in Alaska, have made many friends of different Nations, who have been patient and generous models.

In the School of Life, I feel I have only just begun, and look forward to all I can learn through my chosen craft.

Affectionately,

Diann Haist

A person viewing a painting should see something new which he has not taken the time to see before, or something which creates an emotional impact in him. This is Art.

Biography

The eldest of three children, Diann Haist was born and raised in a small town in southern Ontario, Canada. Haist enjoyed an early exposure to fine art through her meetings with some latter members of the legendary Canadian Group of Seven artists, who gave her painting tips as she followed them around her little town as they were plein air painting. She held her first solo exhibition at the age of thirteen, and in her college years, Haist pursued a classical art education. Her studies in Canada under the tutelage of Audrey Garwood and Doris McCarthy helped instill an enthusiasm for drawing and painting with passion.

After her formal training, Haist kept up her interest in Life Drawing, and began teaching, always emphasizing the importance of drawing from life as a strong foundation upon which to build a work of art.

Haist's work typically employs the combined techniques of the Impressionist Masters and the Old Masters. Being classically oriented, she begins each figurative piece as an abstract, often using a toned canvas, employing Rembrandt's technique of wiping out the masses of her subject with a rag as the base upon which to build. Her figurative works are also based on a solid grounding of drawing from life as it is her belief that the ability to draw well, to observe structure and balance, is the basis of creating a convincing work of art.

Haist approaches her landscape paintings differently from the figurative works. There is usually no drawing involved. She lays down broad areas of color and allows the masses of light to guide her to her subject and to the liveliness and depth that have become her trademark. Each layer applied allows the brilliance of the previous layer to come through, similar to the working methods of the French Impressionists, such as Monet.

Over her career of forty-plus years, Diann Haist has had many successful solo exhibitions which have garnered her an enviable core of collectors. Her versatility as an artist allows her to explore a variety of themes: her oils and acrylics, either on canvas or paper, display a bold brush stroke and confident technique.

Haist's paintings are part of numerous major corporate and private collections in Canada, the United States, Japan, Argentina and throughout Europe.

Diann Haist's work is known internationally in over 40 countries through Fine Art posters published by Posters International.
Fine Art giclee's of selected works by Diann Haist are also available through Bootstrap Publishing at HaistArt.com.

Diann currently resides in Alaska where the big landscape and it's Indigenous People are a never-ending source of inspiration.

"The inspiration for my art comes from a combination of extensive travels, with much outdoor painting and sketching from life, as well as a passion for music.
I have learned much from my favorite artists, Degas, Monet, Emile Gruppe, Edgar Payne, Nicolai Fechin, Lawren Harris, William Merritt Chase, John Singer Sargent, Wassily Kandinsky, Anders Zorn, as well as some 19th Century Scandinavian Impressionists"
